However, the characteristic bright fluid signal of balanced SSFP can obscure vascular structure when long-T1 fluids, such as edema or sinovial fluid, are present in the region of interest. Balanced SSFP angiograms of the hand and foot, for example, suffer from bright sinovial fluid signal in the joints. Balanced SSFP angiograms of the extremities in patients with peripheral swelling may be obscured by bright signal from edema.

Non-contrast-enhanced Flow-independent Peripheral Angiography with Magnetization-prepared IDEAL Balanced-SSFP

Introduction: Flow-independent angiography can depict vessel morphology without contrast agents and in cases of slow flow, because it relies on only T1, T2 and chemical shift [1]. 3D balanced (b)SSFP sequences are excellent candidates for producing these angiograms [2-4], but the vessel contrast can be compromised by several factors including field inhomogeneity, partial-volume effects, large v...

Flow-independent subtractive non-contrast enhanced MRA using flow insensitive and sensitive SSFP-echo

Introduction: Computer tomographic angiography (CTA) is the gold standard for visualizing the arteries in patients with severe peripheral artery disease (PAD) that require revascularization. However, x-ray dye used in CTA should be avoided in patients with kidney diseases or severe diabetes, which is equally the case for gadolinium contrast agents. Further, CTA exposes patients to ionizing radi...

Non-contrast-enhanced Flow-independent Peripheral Angiography using a 3D Concentric Cylinders Trajectory

Introduction: Non-contrast-enhanced flow-independent angiography (FIA) exploits intrinsic tissue parameters such as T1, T2 and chemical shift to generate vessel contrast [1]. Unlike flow-dependent methods, FIA can generate stable vessel contrast even with slow flow potentially in the diseased leg. Magnetization-prepared 3D SSFP sequences have been of interest for FIA [2,3], but an important iss...

Noncontrast MRA using Spiral Refocused Turbo Spin Echo

Introduction: Flow-independent angiography is a type of noncontrast-enhanced imaging that relies on the NMR properties of tissue, rather than flow, to generate contrast. RARE-type sequences are capable of generating contrast between blood and surrounding tissue based on T2 differences, but conventional RARE sequences have a non-zero first moment at the RF pulses and at odd echoes, and are there...

Anatomic assessment of pulmonary veins and left atrium - comparison of magnetic resonance angiography with gadoteric acid, the blood pool contrast agent B22956/1 and a non-contrast enhanced imaging approach

Methods We compared 3 different MRI methods. First a noncontrast enhanced T2-prep steady state free precession (SSFP)-sequence, second, a high resolution IR-SSFP sequence with the blood pool contrast agent B22956/1 and third, a breath hold IR-SSFP atriography using the extravascular contrast agent gadoteric acid. Fourteen healthy volunteers (B22956/1-IR-SSFP) and 20 consecutive patients (T2-pre...
